Hattie’s Toyland is not just another toy store; it is a heartfelt tribute to Hattie Ruth, the daughter of owners Taylor and Kelsee Philpot, who tragically passed away during pregnancy in 2020. The Philpots had just settled in Trussville, excited to raise their growing family, when they faced the unimaginable loss of their daughter. In the wake of their grief, the couple found solace in the support of their community, which inspired them to create something beautiful in Hattie’s memory.
“We wanted it to be fun and life-giving and whimsical,” Kelsee explained. “We thought it’d be cool to have a toy store in her honor.” This vision has blossomed into a vibrant space where families can come together to celebrate life’s joyful moments.
A Community Celebration
The grand opening of Hattie’s Toyland was marked by a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 13, attended by members of the Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce and local residents. Taylor expressed the overwhelming sentiment shared by many: “The number one statement that we’ve heard is that ‘Trussville needed this, our community needed this.’”
The store has quickly become a beloved destination, where the excitement of children is matched by the joy of adults rediscovering their own childhoods. “It’s been really magical to see people’s faces light up,” Taylor said, describing the scene of kids running around, overwhelmed by the array of toys, while adults share in the delight.

Kelsee noted that many customers come in to mark special occasions, whether it’s a birthday or a special gift. “I feel like every day someone’s coming in–it’s their birthday or they have birthday money or they’re headed to a birthday,” she shared. The store plans to host story time read-alouds for children aged five and under on Thursday mornings, complete with crafts and snacks.
